Ontelaunee / Maiden Creek
They are one and the same.
Ontelaunee Creek starts at Route 309 at the base of the ridge in
Lehigh County. It then flows southwesterly, picking up smaller
tributaries and becoming larger. It is then named Maiden Creek when
it enters Berks County near Kempton. It continues its southwest
migration into Lake Ontelaunee, where it is the sourced out by the
Reading Area Water Authority as drinking water for the greater
Reading area. The water that doesn't make it into the drinking
water system continues downstream until it reaches the Schuylkill
River just below Leesport.
Kistler Creek
Enters the Maiden Creek Northeast of
Kempton.
Stony Run
Enters the Maiden Creek Southeast of
Kempton
Pine Creek
This creek drains the eastern side of
Hawk Mountain and the Appalachian Train from approximately Dans
Pulpit to the Pinnacle. Rausch Creek flows down from the
base of Hawk Mountain and Owls Head and enters Pine Creek along Pine
Creek road and is part of the Pine Creek Sub-basin. Pine
Creek then enters the Maiden Creek from the Northeast about 5 miles
north of Lenhartsville.
Furnace Creek
This creek drains the south side of
the Hawk Mountain area that encompasses The Pulpit Rock. Furnace
Creek flows into the Hamburg Reservoir and continues in a
southeasterly direction until it enters the Maiden Creek in
Lenhartsville.
Sacony Creek
This creek originates from the
south side of the Oley Hills which is in the Federally designated
Pennsylvania Highlands. It is 17.5 miles in length with a section
being designated as Exceptional Value by the PA DEP. It is
the drinking water for the town of Kutztown. Sacony Creek and
Sacony Marsh are listed as high priority sites for protection in the
Berks County Open Space and Recreation Plan, the Maiden Creek
Watershed Conservation Plan, and the Berks County Comprehensive
Plan. This creek is also listed in the Berks County Natural Areas
Inventory as a high Priority site for protection. Mill Creek
is a major tributary and flows in from Lehigh County near New
Smithville. The Sacony then enters the Maiden Creek in Virginville.
Moselem Creek
This creek has its beginnings just southwest of Kutztown. It flows
through some golf courses and right past a quarry. It follows Route
662 for a short distance and then enters the Maiden Creek
just above Lake Ontelaunee.
Peters Creek
Is a short, but an Exceptional
Value creek that flows directly into Lake Ontelaunee on
the south side.
Bailey Creek
Is also a relatively short creek that
flows directly into Lake Ontelaunee on the North Side. It is
hampered by extensive agriculture but we are slowly working and
hoping to have this problem fixed.
Willow Creek
Starts from Southeast of Fleetwood
and flows just North of the town. It continues its migration
through Blandon and enters the Maiden Creek just before the Route
222 by-pass.
